HAPPY NEW YEAR!! And Congratulations grandpa Tom!!
Happy New Year Tom
2020 will be #teamwerk’s breakthrough season!
Update time - Tom is back from the final stage of Q-school and the question that everyone is probably wondering is "what's next?" - hopefully this post will help with that answer and also is a means by which we humbly ask if you can help Tom Werkmeister.
2020 plans - Tom finished outside of the top 30 of Q-School which means he has no status at this point for the 2020 PGA Champions Tour. Each week there is a pre-qualifier for players with no status where the top 5 scores will advance to the actual tournament qualifier held the following Monday or Tuesday. The top 4 from there will make it into the event for the week. Once Tom does this he will no longer have to play in the "pre-qualifier" moving forward.
This means that there will be added travel and expenses as Tom continues to pursue his attempt to be successful on the Champions Tour. His schedule could well be impacted based on the expenses associated with this (lodging expenses for the extra qualifier mainly) and his tournament selection will be impacted by how to best allocate these funds in 2020. His regional schedule, including events in the state of Michigan, is not scheduled to change and Tom plans to participate in all of those events as in previous years.
Sponsorship - we teased a few weeks back that there is a new sponsor on board for 2020, and we announced this is Maple Hill Golf. Like most touring professionals, one sponsor does not fully satisfy the financial expenses associated with this. Tom's previous sponsors have decided to wish him well from behind the ropes and will no longer be contributing any financial backing. As the saying goes, when one door closes, another one opens up. So, that open door presents a significant opportunity for additional new sponsorship to come on board, which is where we are asking for your help. If you are aware of a company who would benefit from being part of Tom's team then we would love to talk with them. Tom brings a tremendous value to his partners including name recognition, logo placement, appearances and exposure to a very strong group. His sponsors also benefit by becoming part of "teamwerk" and contributing to a great story that is not done being written. If you own your own business and share our vision then we want to talk to you. If you know of someone who would be a great fit as a sponsor then we ask you to take the first step toward this on our behalf. Share this post with them. Put them in touch with us or give us their info. Invite others to his page and keep growing our reach. We are like the military but instead of men we are looking for a few good corporate partners to join us in 2020.
Like any good story there is a beginning, a middle and an end. There are often obstacles along the way as well which makes the ending that much more rewarding to learn. Tom's story has the great beginning of success, winning and achievement. The middle part is where we are today, with all of the challenges and intrigue that we know you all feel right along with him during tournaments. The ending is yet to come and I can promise you that it is gonna be great!

#teamwerkWill Third Time Be The PGA Tour Champions Charm for Tom Werkmeister?
Tom Werkmeister, a Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member and one of the state’s top amateurs for years, is playing this week in the first of two stages of the PGA Tour Champions Qualifying School.
It’s the third consecutive year since turning professional at age 50 that the Grandville golfer has taken on the over-50 set. He tied for 23rd in the final stage in 2017 and tied for 18th in the final stage in 2018, both times among the top 30 who received status for entry into the Monday qualifiers that are presented each tournament week through the season.
The top five in the final stage is the goal. Those are the only players who earn fully exempt status for the season on the tour that makes it very challenging for qualification by players who did not have stellar PGA Tour careers that included wins and high earnings rankings.
“What I’ve been going through the last couple years is a roller-coaster ride,” he said. “I’m more accustomed to it, and I know what to expect and how it works. I think I will handle it better because I’m prepared better with what I’ve learned.”
A two-year sponsorship package he put together when he turned 50 has expired, but he has been in discussion with his financial backers.
“A lot depends on how I do in Q-School and that only makes sense,” he said. “It adds some pressure I guess, but there’s pressure every week trying to win a qualifier and I’m not looking at it that way. I’m committed to this and I’ve seen enough of the lifestyle, the life of a tour player, that I know it would be great for me and that it’s something I want.”
He has played in seven tournaments over the last two seasons and earned $48,936 in official Champions Tour money. He was 110 in the Schwab Cup rankings at the end of the 2019 season. He had to make it via pre-tournament qualifying each time, including two U.S. Senior Open appearances. He has also played well in several mini-tour events, including a few one and two-day wins, and played well in the Michigan Open each year.
He is at one of three first-stage tournaments this week. He will play in Florida at TPC Tampa. Other first-stage events are being played in Texas and California.
“They take the top 30 percent of the field on to the final stage, and there are 75 players in this one, so you have to get in that top 20,” he said.
His game is on solid footing at this point and he hopes it carries through the four rounds this week.
“I’ve been playing pretty good in the last several rounds in Michigan, and I’ve played good the last few rounds down here,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it.”
